Cardinal Nichols will renew the consecration of England and Wales to the Immaculate Heart of Mary in Westminster Cathedral on Sat 18th February 2017. Please pray a novena to the Immaculate Heart of Mary from the 9th - 17th February 2017 that this re-consecration of England and Wales during the centenary celebrations of Our Lady's apparitions at Fatima will bear much fruit for our nation. His Eminence will also receive, bless and crown the World Apostolate of Fatima National Pilgrim Virgin statue.

Cardinal Griffin undertook the first consecration of England and Wales to the Immaculate Heart of Mary on 16th July 1948.  The Tablet report of the ceremony estimated that between 8 and 10 thousand Catholics would attend, joining Cardinal Griffin in the grounds of Walsingham Abbey in a procession of the Blessed Sacrament, followed by the "the act of consecration of England and Wales to the Immaculate Heart of Mary, on behalf of the Hierarchy, the clergy and faithful, of England and Wales." Commenting on the fact that pilgrims would converge on Walsingham after a fourteen-day pilgrimage carrying special crosses from various parts of England and Wales Cardinal Griffin said in his address:

Your pilgrimage has been a source of inspiration to thousands, Catholic and non-Catholic, many of whom would have wished to make the journey with you and all of whom have been very much with you in spirit. But pilgrimages, for all their outward show of devotion to the mother of God, are but the symbols of that ever-living love with which our daily lives must be filled. We have to carry that same spirit of prayer and penance into our ordinary daily lives, into the affairs of each day, no matter what their outward importance. Prayer, then, and penance is the answer to the materialism with which we are surrounded today.

The World Apostolate of Fatima are deeply grateful to Cardinal Nichols and Westminster Cathedral authorities for facilitating the Crowning of Our Lady of Fatima and the reconsecration to the Immaculate Heart which inaugurates a nationwide program of 18 cathedral Visitations that have been arranged from May to October.

The World Apostolate of Fatima explain the significance of the reconsecration to the Immaculate Heart of Mary:

Please pray that it will be possible for the bishops to join with Cardinal Nichols in making that consecration. The wonderful consequences of consecration to the Immaculate Heart of Mary were clearly demonstrated in Portugal in the 1930s, in Poland after it was carried out on 8 Sept 1948, and for Russia, when it was delivered from the scourge of Marxist atheism by Pope St John Paul II’s consecration of 25th March 1984.

Let us pray fervently that the consecration to be carried out by Cardinal Nichols will likewise have the effect of raising up the Church, as in those countries, and overcoming the forces in society that increasingly threaten Catholic life. Only the Immaculate Heart of Mary has the power over the devil to halt the attack on the family, the culture of death, and the dictatorship of relativism and secularism which has engulfed Western civilisation. These are the “errors of Russia” — the denial and rejection of God — of which Our Lady warned at Fatima in 1917, and for which her message provides the remedy. The World Apostolate of Fatima works in communion with the Church to bring about compliance with her requests.

When Pope Francis renewed the consecration to the Immaculate Heart of Mary at Rome on 13th October 2013, the Marian Day in the Year of Faith, in the presence of Our Lady’s statue from Fatima, Cardinal Nichols made the following comment:

“Devotion to Mary is not an optional ‘add-on’ to Catholic belief, but an expression of what is at the heart of our faith.  To draw close to Mary is to draw close to Jesus.  As the earliest Christian witnesses often taught, Mary was open to receiving Jesus in her mind and in her heart before she gave birth to him in her flesh.  For this reason she is the first of all the disciples of the Lord as she is the most faithful of all the Lord’s followers.  In her maternal love of us she continues to assist us in our following of Him; a consecration to her Immaculate Heart gives expression to this in a simple way”.

The Cardinal’s consecration, and his teaching about it, effectively complies with the wish of Jesus, conveyed to Lucia by Our Lady in the June apparition, to use her “to make me known and loved. He wants to establish in the world devotion to my Immaculate Heart;” and the reason for the devotion was explained in July, after the vision of hell — to save souls from going there. The name Jesus means Saviour; this is why he came to be born of the Blessed Virgin, “to save his people from their sins” (Mt 1: 21).
