Cardinal Nichols will receive, bless and crown the World Apostolate of Fatima National Pilgrim Virgin statue in Westminster Cathedral on Sat 18th February 2017. During the celebration His Eminence will renew the consecration of our country to the Immaculate Heart of Mary that was made by Cardinal Griffin on 16th July 1948.

It was the unfailing fidelity and commitment of Blessed Francisco and Blessed Jacinta in complying with Our Lady’s requests that raised them up to become the first children in the history of the Church to attain heroic virtue in the course of their family life. After Mass people will be able to venerate their relics and participate in the devotions to Our Lady. This will be followed, at 4:00 pm, by a Fatima Symposium in Westminster Cathedral Hall, with further details in the flyer. The National Pilgrim Virgin Statue and Relics will be present in the Cathedral until 2:30 pm on Sunday 19 February. (see programme at the end of this article)

By a singular favour of Our Lady, and so that she may be worthily honoured in her Centenary year, a special new silver gilt Centenary Crown is being made for her statue, by the same firm in Portugal that made the richly-bejewelled crown that is only worn at Fatima on 13th of the month. It is being freely offered to Our Lady in return for whatever offerings the faithful freely wish to make to Our Lady in items of gold and silver, including jewellery containing some elements of gold or silver. This is how the original crown was made. Of course the most important offering we can make to Our Lady is that of our own heart, praying that we may be worthy to receive from her the graces of her Son.

Please pray that it will be possible for the bishops to join with Cardinal Nichols in making that consecration. The wonderful consequences of consecration to the Immaculate Heart of Mary were clearly demonstrated in Portugal in the 1930s, in Poland after it was carried out on 8 Sept 1948, and for Russia, when it was delivered from the scourge of Marxist atheism by Pope St John Paul II’s consecration of 25th March 1984. I documented that extraordinary development in my book Fatima, Russia & Pope John Paul II, which is still available from Gracewing UK.

Let us pray fervently that the consecration to be carried out by Cardinal Nichols will likewise have the effect of raising up the Church, as in those countries, and overcoming the forces in society that increasingly threaten Catholic life. Only the Immaculate Heart of Mary has the power over the devil to halt the attack on the family, the culture of death, and the dictatorship of relativism and secularism which has engulfed Western civilisation. These are the “errors of Russia” — the denial and rejection of God — of which Our Lady warned at Fatima in 1917, and for which her message provides the remedy. The World Apostolate of Fatima works in communion with the Church to bring about compliance with her requests.

When Pope Francis renewed the consecration to the Immaculate Heart of Mary at Rome on 13th October 2013, the Marian Day in the Year of Faith, in the presence of Our Lady’s statue from Fatima, Cardinal Nichols made the following comment:

“Devotion to Mary is not an optional ‘add-on’ to Catholic belief, but an expression of what is at the heart of our faith.  To draw close to Mary is to draw close to Jesus.  As the earliest Christian witnesses often taught, Mary was open to receiving Jesus in her mind and in her heart before she gave birth to him in her flesh.  For this reason she is the first of all the disciples of the Lord as she is the most faithful of all the Lord’s followers.  In her maternal love of us she continues to assist us in our following of Him; a consecration to her Immaculate Heart gives expression to this in a simple way”.

The Cardinal’s consecration, and his teaching about it, effectively complies with the wish of Jesus, conveyed to Lucia by Our Lady in the June apparition, to use her “to make me known and loved. He wants to establish in the world devotion to my Immaculate Heart;” and the reason for the devotion was explained in July, after the vision of hell — to save souls from going there. The name Jesus means Saviour; this is why he came to be born of the Blessed Virgin, “to save his people from their sins” (Mt 1: 21).

How many people today have turned away from God, or against Him, and in the words of the Angel’s Pardon Prayer, do not believe, adore, hope and love God ? How many live as if God does not exist ? This is why it is more urgent than ever that the Fatima prayers, which being divine will effect what they say, are repeatedly offered to God for the salvation of souls that otherwise are at risk of being lost.

If people comply with her requests, Our Lady promised an era of peace to the world. Accordingly, as St John Paul II observed, the unfolding of future events, for good or otherwise, depends on our response. He himself demonstrated that truth through the miraculous consequences of his consecration of Russia. All that is required is something so simple and easy, three very young uneducated children were chosen to convey and live it as an example for the Church. May we urge you to offer these prayers, for the good of the Church, the salvation of souls and deliverance from contemporary evils.

The Westminster Cathedral Visitation promises to be a truly joyful occasion, when our hearts will be lifted up to celebrate she who is our holy Queen, the “Mother of Mercy, our life, our sweetness and our hope”; and it will also be an occasion to pour out our heartfelt prayers for our Church, our bishops and priests, our loved ones, families and friends, through the intercession of her Immaculate Heart and also of Blessed Francisco and Jacinta.

We hope that as many people as possible will come, but if you are unable to attend, please join with us in prayers on the day, and we are hoping it will be broadcast by EWTN UK.

We are deeply grateful to Cardinal Nichols and the Cathedral authorities for facilitating this event, and thereby inaugurating the nationwide program of 18 cathedral Visitations that have been arranged from May to October. The venues and dates are on our website, via the link at the top right-hand of the home page, or sign up for our Newsletter at:  www.worldfatima-englandwales.org.uk/newsletter.html so we can inform you as the program for each cathedral is announced.

God bless you and thank you for whatever assistance you can give to make this event a truly worthy celebration in honour of Our Lady. Ave Maria !
